Physical Education
“Sport has the power to change the world. It has the power to inspire. It has the power to unite people in a way that little else does.”
Nelson Mandela, 2000
INTENT
At the Kemsley, we aim to do our best to develop a high-quality physical education curriculum that inspires all children to become lifelong participants in sport and physical activity.
We aim to:
- Deliver high-quality teaching by ensuring all lessons are sequenced and accessible to children of all abilities.
- Expose children to inspirational athletes to act as positive role models in their sporting and life goals, and further inspire an active generation.
- Teach children how to cooperate and collaborate effectively as part of a team and compete appropriately against others, adhering to the principles of fairness, sportsmanship and respect. These are core values we hope to embed in the children to aid in preparing them for the world we live in.
- Provide opportunities for all students to be physically active for sustained periods of time and teach them the value of leading healthy, active lives and making informed and appropriate lifestyle choices.
IMPLEMENTATION
- PE at Kemsley provides enjoyable learning that challenges children through a range of sporting activities including: Invasion Games, Net & Wall Games, Strike and Field Games, Gymnastics, Dance, Outdoor & Adventure Activities and Swimming
- Children participate in one PE lesson each week, covering different sporting activities every half term which follows the long-term plan to ensure requirements of the National Curriculum are fully met.
- All lessons are sequenced and progressive to ensure learning is age and ability appropriate.
- Children have high quality lessons which promote healthy lifestyles and develop the children’s vocabulary and understanding.
- The physical education curriculum is delivered by our class teachers following Val Sabin PE Scheme.
- PE lessons at Kemsley are accessible for all children regardless of sporting ability. We provide suitable learning opportunities for all children, including those with SEND.
- Year 5 children attend swimming lessons at Swallows Leisure Centre, which are taught by specialist swimming teachers, to cover the National Curriculum requirements for swimming and water safety. In addition, top up swimming lessons are offered to children in Year 6 to ensure all children are able to swim 25m before leaving Kemsley Primary Academy.
- We promote both participation and competition through P.E and sport. We ensure all children experience competition at some level, individually or in a team, within lessons.
- All children in KS1 and KS2 have the opportunity to participate in a wide range of extra-curricular sport activities throughout the year.
- We have an annual EYFS, and Y1-Y6 Sports Day, with the emphasis on participation and achievement for all.
- Children in KS1 and KS2 have opportunities to participate in the local Swale Sport Partnership inter- school sports competitions.
- Year 5/6 Play Leaders develop their leadership skills to lead activities and games during lunch times to promote healthy active lifestyles.
- The Kemsley Mile Track is used to help meet the government guideline of children being active for 60 minutes a day.
Assessment
P.E is assessed continuously by teachers. Through use of our assessment programme OTrack, teachers are able to judge whether pupils are meeting the learning objectives through observing during lessons and by reviewing end of unit progress. Teachers are able to adjust activities to support or challenge as appropriate.
IMPACT
At Kemsley, the quality teaching of PE and the opportunities available inspires all pupils to succeed and excel in competitive sport and to be lifelong participants in physical activity. The pupils will:
